GENERAL EXPERIENCE:     I am experienced as a tutor/one-to-one instructor and coach because I taught high school English and Speech for three years. As a high school English and speech teacher, my classes ranged from Composition I and Reading to Advanced Placement Writing and Speech. Currently, I am a training and development consultant. In this role, I design, develop, and deliver training to numerous Fortune 500 clients, health care organizations, and educational institutions. As a consultant, I taught and tutored at Hennepin Technical College, Achieve!  Minneapolis, School District #287, and William Mitchell College of Law. Within the corporate community, I continue to instruct and coach managers and employees. Instructional topics for these students involve a variety of subject areas, including communications, marketing, healthcare, technical, scientific, sales skills, and negotiating techniques. Most important, I am often asked to teach grammar and writing classes to corporate employees and then perform follow-up tutoring to ensure these skills are practiced on-the-job by the employees.
APPROACH TO TUTORING:    My tutoring style is gentle, yet firm. In every case, the student's learning style, educational needs, specific subject focus, and grade level are considered. It is important to to mix each type of learning while tutoring. To illustrate, it is essential that tutors practice the "Tell, Show, Do" philosophy. Studies prove that student retention increases by more than 55% when students are taught my experiencing these instructional methods within each subject area and, if possible, in each tutoring session. In addition, research demonstrates that a friendly approach with a little humor employed during tutoring sessions provides a learning environment in which students want to learn. From a practical standpoint, it is important when tutoring high school students to illustrate how the skills they are learning today will be used in the careers they select tomorrow. As adults know, it is difficult for high school students to visualize their future roles as working adults. Conducting non-threatening quizzes as well as delivering actual tests are critical. As a tutor, I believe in oral quizzes as well as written quizzes for both subject area confidence and long-term retention for the student. In some tutoring sessions, it is often beneficial to include a brief follow-up session several weeks after the tutoring is complete. This follow-up session provides a further learning incentive for the student as well as general assessment of the long-term subject retention and application.
