GENERAL EXPERIENCE:     What I have enjoyed most in my academic career is being able to experience and learn from people of diverse cultures, especially Spanish, French, and Danish speakers. I have found my time helping with the domestic abuse group at the Community-University Health Care Center not only one of the most rewarding experiences of my adult life, but also one of the most educational. I have learned patience, leadership, organization, as well as language skills, and have renewed my determination to work with the community. I love being able to use and teach the Spanish language, and I hope to approach it not only from an academic perspective, but also from a cultural and socioeconomic perspective that enriches and gives greater meaning to the language itself. Although I am not a native speaker, I am grateful for the challenges that learning a second language has given me, and through the experience I have gained a deeper understanding and appreciation of English. Because I have struggled with Spanish, I believe I am in a unique position to understand the struggles that others experience.
APPROACH TO TUTORING:    I believe that culture is an integral part of the language, and that understanding certain cultural norms help the student both learn and experience part of what it means to be a Spanish speaker. I believe that one of the best ways to truly learn a language is to use it, so conversation is of course a very important component. Memorization of vocabulary can only take a student so far; it is important to learn everything within a context. That being said, it is of course important to recognize and build upon the strengths and weaknesses of the individual student, and work towards his or her personal goals. Certain classes also work towards mastering specific tasks, and tutoring is only effective in so far as it can provide another outlet for working with those topics. There are many ways to create an enjoyable and beneficial tutoring experience, and a willingness of both student and mentor to learn is what drives it.
