  GENERAL EXPERIENCE:     Ever since I was a kid, I've loved words/language/reading and writing, so it was natural for me to major in English back in college. I took every writing course I could and then taught Freshman English as a graduate student. Professionally I have always looked for work that would utilize my facility with language, including jobs in writing, proofreading and teaching. Many years ago I tutored college students in writing and have worked with my son throughout his school years. My current part-time work with teaching ESL to adults and children has allowed me to hone my tutoring skills. With the kids, I love helping them with their homework. Good writing is all about organizational skills, and teaching kids how to write well spills over into the rest of their lives too, which I find very rewarding. When you learn how to think in an organized way, writing becomes simple.
  APPROACH TO TUTORING:    I believe that children want to be successful even if they act bored or reluctant. I also believe they can learn anything with the right motivation and direction. I try to make my tutoring sessions enjoyable while staying focused and on-task. I seek out different ways to communicate information so that the student is engaged and 'gets' it. With younger children especially, I strive to make learning fun, using games, music, whatever it takes to keep the student involved.
