GENERAL EXPERIENCE: I am a teacher, tutor, graduate student and community organizer in the Twin Cities area and I bring all of these skills and experiences to bear in my work with students. I have worked for years with students of all ages, from preschool to high school, helping them to improve their academic skills. I have real passion for opening the door for struggling students or for those who just need some guidance to improve their developing abilities. Over the past few years I have taught Social Studies and English in two small private schools and Social Studies in a large public school. I have tutored for a large agencies and small ones, presented workshops for teacher development and worked with hundreds of students with a myriad of needs. As a result of these diverse experiences I am able to adapt quickly to the needs and personality of any student and immediately begin helping them in areas where they need it most. I am also the founder of a professional development organization for teachers in the Twin Cities and have organized over a hundred events and presented dozens of workshops for teachers in the areas of classroom management, reading instruction, curricular reflection, diverse learners and project-based learning.

APPROACH TO TUTORING: My approach with tutoring has always been about accepting my students where they are and working from there. I believe that I must work from students' strengths in order to overcome the places where they are less skilled. Many students are struggling academically not because of a lack of ability but because they simply missed one or two crucial concepts and are lost as a result. I find those areas of confusion, quickly clarify them and then move forward. Students tend to enjoy this approach because it shows them that they can succeed and that their lack of academic success isn't personal, but rather it is a matter of knowing the foundations. I also ensure that the subject material has real world relevancy for students. It is often difficult for students to understand how a given subject field relates to their personal experience. I make this connection for students by communicating the ways in which the subject matter, especially reading and writing, are so crucial in our hyper-literate society.
