GENERAL EXPERIENCE: I have been active in the field of biology for almost ten years. I completed a BS with honors from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I triple majored in Zoology, Biology, and Conservation, and I completed coursework in ecology, evolution, behavior, genetics, environmental studies, and wildlife biology. As a student, I also performed three independent research projects, one of which led to the publication of an article on evolution and genetics in a peer-reviewed journal. I worked extensively as a field and laboratory assistant and as a result gained experience in entomology, forestry, and fish biology. After finishing my undergraduate degree, I went on to acquire an MS in Zoology from Michigan State University, where I took courses in ecology, evolution, and statistics and focused on behavioral ecology. My thesis investigated the effect of visual signals on frugivorous plant-animal interactions. As a graduate student, I also served as the teaching assistant for two undergraduate courses. I organized and taught discussion sections for a behavioral ecology class and led field activities for a mammalian biology course. For both of these classes, I gave individual assistance to students when needed, either in face to face meetings or via email. Currently, I am developing educational materials and coordinating public educational events for an environmental nonprofit. This opportunity has given me further insight into relating scientific ideas in an engaging and easy to understand way.

APPROACH TO TUTORING: I think the first thing to do when beginning a new tutoring relationship is to establish the student’s goals. It is important to know if the student is seeking help in order to achieve a certain overall grade, pass a test, or better understand a specific concept or subject area. After that, I like to explore the student’s understanding of the subject area; often times someone struggles with complicated topics because they have unknowingly misunderstood one or more aspects of the subject’s foundation. Once we have determined the extent of the student’s understanding and knowledge, we can begin the work of building that understanding.
How time is spent during a tutoring session depends on the type of class involved and what the student needs help learning. If the student wants to improve performance solving concrete problems (genetic crosses, population life history tables, etc.) then it is often helpful to work through problems together and discuss each step to insure proper understanding. If a more abstract issue is being studied, having an in depth conversation with examples and enlightening metaphors can lead to clarification. In all cases, it is useful to review the results of graded tests and assignments to see where mistakes were made and how they can be improved in the future.
