GENERAL EXPERIENCE: My friends regularly call me a "history nerd." The custodian who cleans the break room at my current place of work has called me an "encyclopedia" more than once. While captain of the high school quiz bowl team, my teammates called me a "machine." When I was a child, I surprised people with knowledge of facts that are not expected of an elementary school student. During high school, I graduated with highest honors and was the first student in my school to ever attain an "A+" grade in the Advanced Placement U.S. History class. In college, I studied the topic that had most fascinated me, history. This spring, I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 3.97 GPA from Northwestern College. The reason why I have been a "history nerd," an "encyclopedia," and an honor student is that I genuinely love to learn new things. I rarely had difficulty completing my homework in college, because I considered most of it to be enjoyable. I have also enjoyed sharing my knowledge with others. While there is some selfish happiness that comes from impressing friends and relatives with an obscure historical fact, I have found that it is far more enjoyable to help someone understand a historical concept which had been difficult to understand. I was able to do this some while in college as a tutor for the Culture and Language Transition program at Northwestern College. I was particularly happy when a student originally from Ethiopia began to understand the Renaissance, the Reformation, and the Industrial Revolution. It is due to the enjoyment I derived from this tutoring experience that I have decided to seek more tutoring opportunities.

APPROACH TO TUTORING: From what I know, the best way to learn a subject is by repeatedly covering the same subject over and over. Students have some sense of this when they try to cram for a final that is looming over them. However, simply looking over the same information over and over causes only a superficial memory of the material. For a better understanding and remembrance, a student needs to restate facts and connections between those facts in his or her own words. My method for accomplishing this with a student would be primarily through questions. Prior to the session, the student should have read the assigned class reading. In the study of history, completing the required class readings is imperative. I do not know of students who have performed well in history courses without reading the assigned readings. The assigned readings would lay the groundwork for the tutoring session. During the session, the student would be required to answer questions about the assigned readings. This method of question and answer would accomplish the goal of the student restating facts and the connections between those facts in his or her own words.
