GENERAL EXPERIENCE:     I am a former adjunct professor of expository and research writing at Emerson College in Boston, MA. In this position, I taught students the basis for all sound academic writing. We focused on the importance of a clear thesis or argument, the presentation of support materials, the structure of an effective paper, and the various ways to approach the editing process. I also have experience as a tutor in a college writing center, where we approached all aspects of student's academic lives--from the drafting of essays and test preparation to coping with heavy work loads and improving time management skills. I worked with students who were struggling to pass their courses, students who wanted to fine polish their work to assure their A, and foreign students who needed to achieve a better grasp of the English language before they could move on at all. At Emerson, I gained an appreciation for how to approach students at different levels and a fondness for working with them and watching them grow as learners and thinkers.
APPROACH TO TUTORING:    As a tutor and professor, I found that each student needs to be handled uniquely. A lot depends on their comfort with the subject, their organization and time management skills, and their willingness to face challenges. So it is difficult to describe a singular tutoring style. In general, I like to work inside the students' actual assignments. As a former professor, I have many exercises aimed to improve writing and study skills that I could bring in if needed but time is often precious in a tutoring session and students bring their own work and concerns to it. To start, I like to discuss their general ideas for papers or how to approach an assignment. I like to go over what they think their biggest challenges are. Then we work through them together. We go over past work and see where they need improvement. We discuss what they want to say and find ways to best communicate it. I am with the student the entire time, ready to answer questions or weigh options and always there to give encouragement, but am careful not to do the work for them. As a tutor, I hope to give students the benefit of my knowledge and let them find the best path towards acquiring their own.
