GENERAL EXPERIENCE:     I am a senior History major/Spanish minor who loves learning and working with students. I have extensive tutoring experience, having tutored Spanish-speaking elementary students with their English homework, and having served as a writing adviser at Occidental College’s Center for Academic Excellence for the past three years, assisting fellow college students with planning, drafting, and revising writing assignments (one on one sessions, 4-8 hours/week). Many students have requested private tutoring after working with me in the writing center, particularly for their courses in the following departments: English Composition and Literary Studies, Critical Theory and Social Justice, and Spanish. I studied abroad in Granada, Spain last semester, taking courses all conducted in Spanish and interning at a non-profit organization that works with local leaders in both Spain and Latin America. My work and dedication prompted the organization to offer me a full-time position following graduation. I was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa last semester and have maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout college, but those grades have not come easily- they are the result of a great deal of hard work. I understand the challenges students face trying to understand new concepts and complex assignments, to strengthen their skills in a particular area, and to prepare for tests—both standardized and coursework related. I pride myself on being a tutor who is a relatable and patient while simultaneously encouraging students to reach their full potential. I want to help students identify the ways in which they learn most effectively; to teach them the tools they need for success both in and beyond the tutoring session.
APPROACH TO TUTORING:    I love working with students and am extremely patient. I aim to not only help them prepare for a test or complete an assignment, but also to genuinely understand a topic and to have fun along the way. I want them to feel completely comfortable with the class or test material AND to enjoy doing it. I employ both direct and indirect tutoring techniques. I offer detailed explanations and numerous examples to help students understand material, but I ultimately seek to help them develop the foundation they need to complete a problem or assignment on their own--empowering them to find the answer by themselves. I want to instill in them the confidence that they need to succeed in not only that particular assignment or subject, but in all they do!
