GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Since I was in middle school, I have found teaching others to be rewarding when I had the opportunity to help my mom teach her elementary summer school classes. Math was always my favorite subject, but in high school, it became prominent that it was my main interest, because it was always building upon former ideas and provided a challenge. I began tutoring other high school students in algebra. This was the first time I had to begin thinking of concepts in multiple ways to express it to another student that might make more sense. I gained further experience when I was at the University of Minnesota. I tutored at a local middle school in small groups, explaining new concepts to a group on different academic and interest levels. I also was able to sit with a student, one-on-one to explain different methods of solving problems. Finally, as mentioned previously in my application, I worked as a paid TA to help teach new forms of math, namely applications for the math lessons. In all of these settings, I was able to explain more real-world applications of concepts that these students were learning.

APPROACH TO TUTORING: I try to find out some other interests that the student has, and try to apply the concept they are learning to that interest. There are multiple ways of explaining ideas, and I simply need to find the one that works the best. I also teach students to break down a concept into steps. This makes a problem not seem so overwhelming. Additionally, students can see that each concept is merely a set of steps that need to be worked through.
