GENERAL EXPERIENCE: While attending the College of Santa Fe, a faculty member recommended me to the position of peer tutor. Once hired by the Center for Academic Excellence on campus, I worked with many different college students to improve their skills in all phases of the writing process. I quickly found that most students are resistant to learning, even while obviously wanting to do so. There's a psychological component to teaching; one has to help the student confront their difficulties with the material (or the learning process itself) as well as teach them the skills to tackle the subject. My experiences at the Center for Academic Excellence led me to want to teach, and now I am back in school with the purpose of teaching in the biological sciences on the federal TEACH grant. Most recently, I have aided students, informally, in Java computer language courses and in chemistry, helping one student to obtain an A in the former and another who was struggling to improve his performance and pass the class in the latter.

APPROACH TO TUTORING: I find that when students are having difficulty with a subject it is often because they are over-thinking the assignment. I help them to break the problem down into simple steps. This helps to isolate where the student's difficulty lies. It also demonstrates to the student that the problems are in fact solvable. Thirdly, this means that I'm guiding the student through the problem, allowing him or her to solve each part, thereby building confidence. This tutoring technique is also a problem-solving technique, so the student can use it to use in his or her individual studies.
