GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Over the past several years I have gained considerable experience teaching college-level English and working as a professional writer. I hold my Master of Arts degree in English and journalism from the University of Minnesota Duluth, where I also taught college composition and tutored writing, research, and developmental skills. Most recently, I taught beginning writing, literature, and online developmental composition at Bismarck State College, a thriving community college in Bismarck, North Dakota. The strong interpersonal and leadership skills I utilize in teaching and writing complement my passion for working with diverse groups of people within local and campus communities. My professional experience in the classroom continuously cultivates my skills in developing and presenting compelling curriculum in a creative and inspiring manner, while fueling my commitment to mentor traditional, non-traditional, and multicultural students, helping them reach beyond their goals and potential.
Complimenting my experience, I am an enthusiastic instructor, dedicated the academic and personal growth of my students. I am an articulate public speaker, patient tutor, determined teacher, and champion of empowering students and their academic careers. I feel my open-minded, approachable disposition enhances my performance working with students, faculty, and community members with diverse backgrounds and experiences.

APPROACH TO TUTORING: I approach teaching and tutoring as a mentor, guide, and example of one living an intellectual journey. With this responsibility, I not only provide students with a foundation from which to root and nourish skills in critical thinking, analysis, grammar, style, usage, and writing, but provide as well a comfortable, inviting, safe environment in which sensitivity, tolerance, and respect are modeled and practiced.
In such a comfortable environment, I am able to work with a student one-on-one to answer their questions, discover challenging areas that they themselves may not even be aware of, and work toward sharpening their skills and abilities. I identify key areas of improvement and key areas of success and use those areas to build on increasing the student's knowledge and skill in writing and English so they are challenged to reach beyond their potential and ultimately find success.
Finally, I am well grounded in understanding and meeting the educational and individual needs of an academically and culturally diverse student population, while championing self-reliant, intellectually curious, lifelong learners.
