GENERAL EXPERIENCE:     During the past four years while at college I worked as a math tutor for students in entry level math classes. I really loved this job. It is so exciting for me to be able to share my knowledge with a student and watch them be successful. I had one particular student that really helped me realize why I enjoy tutoring so much. He came back all the time when I was working and we struggled through his stats homework together. When he first came for help he was nervous and a bit embarrassed that he didn't understand things. I tried to reassure him that it is okay to ask for help; that is a smart thing to do! I asked him questions to lead him through problems and I helped him to gain confidence in his ability. Soon we were friends and he started bringing classmates with him to ask for help. I enjoyed watching him be successful and believe in himself. I also tutored one of my best friends in physical chemistry. This was a subject that she really had difficulty with. She was almost failing the class when she came to me for help. I worked through the lab reports, conceptual problems, and calculations with her. I helped her to make connections between concepts that were tricky for her. She told me many times that she enjoyed working with me because I didn't make her feel like she was dumb. I try to do that when ever I work with someone. Just because a student is struggling doesn't mean they aren't capable of learning they just need to see it in a different way and practice more.
APPROACH TO TUTORING:    I think tutoring is a very important part of a student's success. The only way tutoring will help is if the student really learns the concepts better. I won't give students answers. I try to break a problem down into simpler steps. Then students can work their way through the steps to the final answer. This helps students see where the answer comes from. I try to make science practical and related to students' lives as much as possible. If students are excited about what they are learning it will be much easier to learn. I also try to make connections between previous learning. I think learning should be fun not something to dread.
