GENERAL EXPERIENCE: I've tutored students for the past ten years and I still walk away from my sessions with a smile. I love the individual attention I can give my students and cherish the moments when a tough math problem is cracked or a revised essay suddenly shines. I have chosen to tutor rather than classroom teach because I enjoy the individual attention I can give struggling students. I enjoy getting to know them, discovering the interests that can motivate them and the fears that can hinder them. I enjoy figuring out what skills they are missing and providing practice, and seeing their growth in confidence as they practice these skills. I get to know my students as people, learning what makes them laugh and which subjects pique their interests.
I bring my own life into my work with students. I've been a classroom teacher, an adult student and a parent of four. I've learned to play the violin as an adult, and I'm a voracious reader. I write fiction for fun and aspire to write it for profit. I have a wide variety of interests to draw upon, including a love of the outdoors, travel and adventure, and the arts. I might find a connection with one student who likes to geocache and another student who loves to dance. There's always a connection--it's just waiting to be discovered.

APPROACH TO TUTORING: Because students exhibit such a wide range of strengths and deficiencies, I can't say I approach any student exactly the same way. With each of my students, though, I pay equal attention to the emotional as well as academic component of a task. When I'm working with a reluctant writer, I think about how difficult the blank page is to a writer, then pull out my bag of tricks to help my student get started. When I've helping students with math phobia, I set the solving of the problem aside and ask them what conclusions they can draw from what they know about the problem. Breaking difficult problems down to manageable parts and then practicing those skills is a key ingredient to my success with students.
