GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Throughout my years of teaching at Kealakehe High School I was responsible for not only the planning and execution of standards based lesson plans, but also curriculum development for the English Department. After creating grade level specific curriculum including reading, writing, and oral speaking lessons, I continued on to develop a cross-curriculum State Test Prep packet for the school, as well as a citizenship curriculum for seniors needing to graduate on time. Further responsibilities included duties as a class advisor. As a class advisor I was in charge of class fundraising, and the planning and managing of class activities such as prom, talent show, and graduation. During my time as a high school English teacher I also had the opportunity to teach the GED test prep class, as well as tutor students of all ages both privately and for Kealakehe High School’s “Waverider Learning Center.”
I continued my work in the West Hawaii community through my time with Habitat for Humanity West Hawaii Inc. (HFHWH). With HFHWH I was responsible for volunteer recruitment, program development, management, scheduling, retention, and recognition. I served on two committees: Family Selection and Support and Building. I produced, and wrote the affiliate newsletter, while continuously updating the affiliate’s literature and website. I also gained a lot of experience with program budgeting as well as data collection, analyzing, and reporting. Furthermore, I participated in the grant writing and reporting for HFHWH. Most importantly, I worked in close conjunction with one of Hawaii State’s most important departments, the Department of Hawaiian Homelands, which works to improve the lives of the native Hawaiian peoples.

APPROACH TO TUTORING: My tutoring style is similar to my teaching style which is to provide the kind of instruction that best suits the students' needs and abilities. With struggling students I always find that the tried and true method of scaffolding works great. Additionally, with tutoring, I think it is extremely important to connect learning with the student's life and their world, so they can understand the applications of their learning.
