GENERAL EXPERIENCE: I have always loved school and especially excelled in Spanish and Math. In High School, I received all A's in every Honors Math course offered, and it's something that I understand well and enjoy tutoring. Spanish has been my favorite subject to learn. I always enjoyed my classes and teachers, so I decided to become fluent in Spanish by making it my major in college. After college, I received an advanced Certificate in Teaching ESL. Through taking these classes, I learned how to teach, which is a skill that has really enhanced my tutoring. I have 5 years of teaching experience as an ESL instructor in southern CA. I had so much fun teaching adults 18+ in these classes. I taught English at all levels, Beginner - Advanced. My tutoring experiences began as students of mine began to refer friends and neighbors to me. I tutored High School students, college students and adults who wanted to learn more for personal reasons. I met with these people once a week, one-on-one, for 1-2 hours at a time.

APPROACH TO TUTORING: The first session of a tutoring time is especially important. It's critical to get the whole picture of the student, including: learning about them as a person, their learning styles, what the academic goals are, how much of the subject matter is understood, and discovering where the problem areas are. Then, taking this knowledge, I can create a personal approach to teaching them, in a way that they will not only understand, but that is enjoyable to them, and helping them to
achieve their specific goals. I am extremely patient, and take much time in the explanation process, letting the student feel completely supported, meanwhile slowly building their confidence in producing the skill on their own. Everyone I have tutored has seen my infectious love of learning/teaching and it helps them also enjoy our time together, thereby creating a positive learning experience. I am also creative in my teaching, because I really believe that if I'm not having fun, then they're not having fun, and it becomes a boring time, which is counter-productive. Being creative also allows me to bring in a multi-sensory approach to teaching, because when you include all the senses, you learn it better, and the repetition is an added bonus. Ultimately, my goal is that the student does not need me anymore. I try to focus on helping them to become self-sufficient in learning the material, so they can feel comfortable at some point to continue on their own, with confidence!
