GENERAL EXPERIENCE: I love to learn. While I do lean toward literature and language arts, I enjoy learning about any subject area. I find that my enthusiasm for education in general engages other people and entices them to learn. As a substitute teacher and graduate student, I have discovered that education is not merely facts and information - it is the ability to know facts, yes, but to also think critically and analyze the information. Outside of formally teaching K-12 students, I have informal opportunities to tutor peers and people in the workplace. An acquaintance, for example, asked me to explain realism as opposed to naturalism in literature. After I provided working definitions of each topic and we had an animated discussion, he commented that he would sign up for any class I taught. I bring enthusiasm, thoughtfulness, and practicality to education. I can communicate concepts in comprehensible ways to help learners connect with their subjects.

APPROACH TO TUTORING: I see tutoring and education as a conversation between people. It is my job to present ideas, but to also listen to the student. Some
subjects, especially literature and language, are not seen as practical or applicable, especially by younger learners. Instead of lecturing students about the necessity of education, I translate the information into activities that are fun and educational. I see tutoring as an opportunity to assist a learner on his/her journey and build their confidence in their abilities to not just know, but to think.
